Great Horned Owls seem to prefer hunting from elevated areas that overlook fields. They can hear and see their prey more easily from such an unobstructed vantage point. This one I photographed in Southwest Michigan near such a field.

I would just like to see one of these owls.
funny — i/we HEAR a couple (3?) of them practically every night …
Beautiful! What kind of equipment do you use to get this clear, upclose picture? boyerwrites@yahoo.com
Stunning.
We have great horned owls in the trees outside our house, but we rarely see more than a shadowy glimpse of them. We hear them a lot but you can’t take a photo of that. I love this picture!
You never know when an opportunity will arise. I am always excited when it happens and a bit nervous I’ll miss the shot. I’m happy when it all works out 🙂
SUPER!
Jeffrey: your photos are very good in general, but this one is stunning — seriously, it (briefly) took my breath away!
and my wife likes it too.
Much appreciated! 🙂
Great photo!
Thanks! 🙂
Gorgeous photo!!
What an absolutely stunning photo of this impressive owl! The colors and the detail are just amazing, as is the expression conveyed by this pose.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the comment 🙂

Wonderful picture!
This is a beautiful picture of this bird. I have never been able to get a shot of a Great Horned Owl in daylight, but keep trying. Nice going.
