I found this Northern Flicker yesterday as it was sitting in a field under sunny skies. I like this angle which displays the distinctive red mark on the back of its head. The Northern Flicker is a member of the woodpecker family. I’ve seen a few over the years, but this is the closest I’ve been to one.

Beautiful birds. We have them too but ours are the red-shafted ones and I think (judging by the bit of yellow peeking out on this one) that yours is the yellow-shafted northern flicker. Nice closeup!
Thanks Anneli! I didn’t know there were different varieties of them 🙂
Beautiful markings
