Great Horned Owls seem to prefer hunting from elevated areas that overlook fields. They can hear and see their prey more easily from such an unobstructed vantage point.
This one I photographed in Southwest Michigan near such a field.

Walking by a tree with this owl carefully hiding, you could be forgiven for not seeing it. I caught this little one peaking out from a hiding place.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for for Snowy owls soon. I found this one nearby in West Michigan during a past winter and hope to see more again.

I was happy to find this Great Horned Owl near where I live in Southwest Michigan. I liked the golden light from the setting sun that enhanced the color of its feathers.
